Behind the Design

I was 14 when I was sexually assaulted by a member of my family. And despite the fact that it wasn't my hand doing the groping, I felt ashamed. I kept silent, I adjusted my behaviour, I removed myself from family gatherings. Why was I changing my ways when I was never the problem? 

From birth, women are told to keep their emotions in check. "Don't cause a scene." "Don't be so dramatic." This subtle invalidation of our emotions is not only sexist, but extremely dangerous. It's the reason that so many sexual assault cases go unreported. It's the reason that men slip through the fingers of justice one too many times. It's the reason that despite being at my dad's birthday party when it happened, I didn't say or do a thing.  

It's time for that to change. This necklace is a warning. Don't f*cking touch me, or I'll burn your house down.
