Behind the Design
Did you know that the first women’s razor was invented in 1915? It was named: “Milady Decollette”. But this milestone for the beauty industry wasn’t as beneficial for women as it sounds. Its marketing strategy was rooted in deeply sexist ideals. Instead of simply selling a functional tool, the razor was marketed with the underlying message that women’s bodies were inherently flawed and required constant taming and maintenance. Promoting smooth, hairless skin as a key to femininity, this reinforced the idea that women’s worth was tied to their appearance. With body hair being described as an “embarrassing problem to have” this message paved the way for advertisements targeting and profiting from women’s insecurities. In time, this perpetuated unrealistic beauty ideals, encouraging women to modify their natural bodies to meet unrealistic societal expectations.
The book charm says it all: They give us insecurities and then they profit from them.
